Today I visited Parliament House to watch Dimitrio Sidi open the Adjournment Debate as part of the 2014 Western Australian YMCA Youth Parliament program. I had sponsored Dimitrio to attend the program. He was chosen as the Member for South Perth and also elected as this year’s Youth Premier by his fellow Youth Parliamentarians.
The Youth Parliament runs once a year and places young people in the roles of Members of Parliament by guiding them to work with their peers and communities to develop a piece of Legislation. The program is facilitated by YMCA Perth and receives assistance from the Western Australian Government. The program aims to educate youth about the political process and importantly provides young people with a forum to discuss the issues that matter to them. Dimitrio, who lives in Manning, sat as a member of the Environment Committee and was able to discuss issues he feels passionately about such as energy and sustainability.
