Life-Changing Volunteers Celebrated

I was delighted that local residents Vida Corbett and Warwick Boardman (right) were able to accompany me to the National Volunteer Week gala awards presentation dinner last night.

This is a significant volunteering event held at the Hyatt Regency Perth Hotel where exceptional volunteers from around Western Australia are recognised for promoting the spirit of volunteerism through their endeavours.

Vida, of South Perth, has demonstrated  interest in and assistance to the South Perth Senior Citizens and the Soroptimist International Society of Western Australia.

Warwick, of Salter Point, has volunteered in the areas of cricket, the bike user group, the environment and fighting the plight of Carnaby’s cockatoos.

I extend warm congratulations to the various award category winners, especially radio host and Lifeline founder Graham Mabury, who was named WA Volunteer of the Year. Congratulations also to Holly Ransom and Caitlin Harwood who shared the award for youth volunteer of the year, and to Read Write Now!, an organisation that has helped 20,000 WA adults read and write and was awarded the community volunteer prize.

There are 600,000 volunteers in WA. This volunteering in Australia saves the national economy an estimated $9.4 billion each year.
