This Saturday I was pleased to donate and present the winner’s trophy at the 6th annual Gopher Muster as part of the annual South Perth Fiesta. The event was an exciting battle of speed and wit, with seniors competing on their gophers in speed trials for the Gopher Gold Cup. A big congratulations to Ashley Joyce of Kensington who was this year’s winner, with Judith Schmitzer of Como coming in a very close second. The event was truly enjoyable for all that attended, and was presented by the South Perth Senior Citizens Centre in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Mill Point.
Last Thursday I had the pleasure to attend and speak at the 55th anniversary of the South Perth Senior Citizens Centre.
The centre has come a long way since its formation in 1959 as the “South Perth Old People’s Advisory Committee”. It serves many of the community’s seniors under the popular meals on wheels program and also provides other services and facilities at the centre.
Former South Perth MLA Bill Grayden, the prime mover behind the centre and long-time president, also addressed the gathering. He paid special tribute to the many people who have volunteered at the centre over the years.
