Six local junior rugby players are on top of the world after winning an international junior rugby tournament in Singapore.
Will Offer (South Perth), Oliver Annear, Jamie Drummond (Como), Noah Shaw, Chase Ridley and Callum Roberts (Victoria Park) were all part of the Nedlands Rugby Union Club under-10s team which travelled to Singapore to compete in the annual Centaurs International Youth Tournament on December 6-7.
The Centaurs tournament attracted more than 120 teams in the under-6 to under-16 grades from five different countries – Australia, Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia and host Singapore.
The “Neddies” under-10s played six games over two days in the Centaurs tournament in challenging humid conditions. They got through to the grand final unbeaten to take on the Singapore Cricket Club Academy.
In a thrilling finale, the Neddies boys prevailed by two tries to nil, showing remarkable defence to keep their try line from being crossed.
After the win, the Neddies players were invited onto the main stage to be presented with their winning trophies.
The boys had acclimatised for the conditions with a training run at St Andrew’s Junior School before the tournament.
Coach Mark Drummond said the win had capped off what was a remarkable touring experience for the boys.
“It was an experience I am sure they will treasure for a long time. The boys are all keen to return to Singapore next year to defend their title.”
