“The State Government’s introduction of free off-peak public transport for seniors and aged and disability pensioners has been a huge success,” says John McGrath MLA, Member for South Perth.
Mr McGrath said “Transperth data comparing passenger details from the week before the free travel was introduced showed a 74 per cent increase in seniors travel in the free-travel period, 9am and 3.30pm, predominantly by bus.”
“Through this initiative, the State Government is providing assistance to those who have paid their taxes and contributed so much to our State for so long,” Mr McGrath said.
“It is clear that this innovative and sound policy not only assists seniors but has also benefited other metropolitan commuters who, as a result of its success, now have access to a less-congested public transport system at peak periods.”
“During the election campaign we said we would deliver seniors free off peak and weekend public transport and that is exactly what we have done.”
WA Seniors, Aged and Disability Support Pension cardholders are now entitled to travel for free on all Transperth services between 9.00am – 3.30pm Monday to Friday as well as all day Saturday, Sunday and public holidays.
