Hope yet for the Cynget

Hope yet for the CygnetSouth Perth MLA John McGrath is optimistic that the iconic Cygnet Theatre in Como will not close.

“Following a meeting today with the Stiles family, owner of this heritage listed site, I believe the cinema will continue to operate even after the current 35mm film is replaced by digital technology,” Mr McGrath said.

“Colin Stiles informed me that the owners are talking with interested parties towards ensuring that digital projection is installed into the cinema and other upgrades are put in place.

“This was most comforting given the number of South Perth residents who have expressed concern to me that the Cygnet Cinema may soon have to close its doors.

“I am now hopeful that a satisfactory outcome can be reached commercially.

“The Stiles family has been a part of the fabric of South Perth for many years. Colin’s father James built the cinema in 1938. I don’t believe they will allow it to close.”

The cinema is currently run by a private operator, who recently stated publicly that the business could not afford the $100,000 needed for a digital upgrade.
